How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the commodity on the BOL as Rubber, scrap, hard rubber, pulverized, in bags and reference NMFC 171860, Class 50. Include an SDS and mark the load as hazardous to address combustible dust risk.
- Use heavy-duty, dust-tight bags with antistatic liners, then palletize in interlocked layers. Stretch-wrap to the pallet base, add a top sheet, and prevent overhang to avoid punctures.
- Control dust and ignition sources: keep bags sealed, avoid tearing during handling, cover pallets, and keep away from hot work or sparks. Clean any spills immediately to prevent fines dispersion.
- Confirm your LTL carrier accepts hazmat bagged powders and schedule pickup with any required documentation. Avoid stacking heavy freight on top to prevent burst or leakage.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
