How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the item description matches: empty cartridge cases with primers installed (small‑arms), packed in boxes. Do not combine with live ammo, powder, or projectiles.
- Mark hazmat on paperwork and the BOL: list NMFC 175515, Class 100, and use the proper shipping name “Cases, cartridge, empty, with primer” with the correct UN/NA ID and emergency contact as required.
- Package to protect primers from impact: rigid fiberboard boxes with partitions or trays, consistent orientation, filled voids, and secure overpack on a pallet with stretch wrap and edge guards; keep away from heat and ignition sources.
- Tender only to carriers that accept small‑arms explosives divisions; share SDS/EX documentation and request pickup appointments to avoid terminal refusals or delays. Class is fixed at 100, so no density calc needed.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Prevents reclass charges and refusals by using the correct fixed Class 100 and clear hazmat declaration for primed cases.
- Reduces incidents and claims with shock‑resistant, UN‑rated packaging and compliant labeling, lowering liability and insurance exposure.
- Improves transit and pricing by targeting LTL carriers that accept hazardous small‑arms components, minimizing interline handoffs and delays.
- Speeds quoting and audits since no density factor applies—clean documentation and a single class simplify rating and negotiations.
