Notes
Note 175582: NOTE-Applies only on sets consisting of lifting rigs; or lifting trunnions, skids and shaft end covers.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Choose the right prep: ship loose for rush moves with carrier blocking/bracing, or package on a skid/crate with steel banding. Mark BOL as “loose” or “packages.”
- Prepare the unit: drain oils and coolant, cap ports, cover control panels, and protect shafts or couplings. Use VCI wrap for iron/steel to limit corrosion during transit.
- Plan handling: mark center of gravity, identify lifting lugs or forklift points, and state total weight and dimensions for carrier equipment planning—even though Class 50 is fixed.
- Document clearly: list “Shipping Devices—Boiler/Generator/Motor, Iron or Steel, NMFC 175580” on the BOL; reference Note Item 175582 if applicable; declare non-hazardous; confirm Class 50.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Lower landed costs with a fixed Class 50—dense iron/steel machinery typically qualifies for better LTL rates than higher classes.
- Operational flexibility: ability to move units loose or packaged helps meet urgent outage, rental, or replacement timelines without re-rating.
- Reduced billing disputes: a clear, single classification minimizes reclass fees and inspection delays across carriers and lanes.
- Broader carrier options and simpler routing thanks to non-hazardous status, improving capacity access and schedule reliability.
