How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Label each shipment as “Sizing, NOI,” include NMFC 176540 and Class 60, and note whether it’s dry (bags) or liquid/bulk (drums or pails).
- Use inner containers in sturdy boxes for small pack sizes; for plant replenishment, palletize sealed drums or pails with top protection against moisture.
- For dry powders or granules, ship in heavy-duty bags or Package 1457-compliant sacks; add liners and stretch-wrap to prevent leaks and sift-outs.
- Examples: 5-gal pails of synthetic sizing on a 48x40 pallet with edge guards; 50-lb paper sizing bags stretch-wrapped with a moisture barrier sheet.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 60 keeps LTL rates competitive for routine textile and paper mill replenishment versus higher classes that inflate per-hundredweight costs.
- Clear NOI coverage across boxes, drums, pails, and bags reduces reclass risk and unexpected rebills, stabilizing your landed cost.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines carrier selection and avoids hazmat accessorials, speeding quotes and tendering.
- Packaging flexibility (inner containers or bulk) supports both outbound production batches and inbound raw material flows with fewer SKUs.
