NMFC Description Class
176880.00 Sod, chopped or not chopped, in bags, bales, boxes or crates 70

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Package sod in rigid boxes or crates for LTL. If starting with bags or bales, place them inside boxes/crates with liners and drain control to prevent leaks.
  2. Palletize with airflow in mind: use a 48x40 pallet, keep stack height under ~48 in, band or strap instead of tight shrink-wrap to reduce condensation and turf heat.
  3. Protect terminals and trailers from moisture and soil. Line crates with breathable material and absorbent pads; leave slight gaps for ventilation.
  4. Print Class 70 and packaging type on the BOL (e.g., 24 boxes on 1 pallet). Request dry van with ventilation and avoid weekend layovers for fresher delivery.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 70 simplifies pricing and helps avoid reclass fees, keeping sod quotes predictable across carriers.
  • Boxed or crated presentation speeds dock handling and reduces mess-related accessorials, claims, and cleanup charges.
  • Clear NMFC alignment improves claim defensibility and lowers risk of inspections, reweighs, or delays at cross-docks.
  • Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and cuts surcharges, supporting tight install windows for landscapers and sports fields.
