How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List on the BOL as: Sour, laundry, NOI — boxes, NMFC 177020, Class 55, non-hazardous. Keep the packaging type as boxes to match the listing.
- Use heavy-duty corrugated boxes with sealed inner containers and a poly liner; add absorbent pads to control minor leaks and protect neighboring freight.
- Palletize tightly: no overhang, use corner boards and stretch wrap; avoid stacking with alkalis or bleach products to prevent chemical incompatibility issues.
- Include the SDS with shipment and label cartons “Laundry Sour, Non-Hazardous.” Note lot numbers for traceability to laundries, hospitality, healthcare, or uniform services.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 55 simplifies quoting and budgeting—no density calculation or dimensional breakpoints to manage.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat fees and special handling surcharges, reducing total landed cost.
- Clear NMFC mapping (177020) lowers reclassification risk, helping prevent delays, reweighs, and surprise rate adjustments.
- Box-friendly packaging streamlines LTL consolidation, improving cube efficiency and damage prevention for recurring supply shipments.
