How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Select approved packaging: sturdy boxes or NMFC Package 1241/1273. Pad gears, cap shaft ends, and use tube or corner protectors to prevent bending or tooth damage.
- Kit small pieces together. Bag brackets, clamps, and swivel joints inside the master carton and label the kit SKU so every set arrives complete.
- Stop metal-on-metal contact. Wrap shafts and gear wheels with foam or kraft, add dividers, and fill voids so parts cannot shift in transit.
- State the class on paperwork: “NMFC 177200, Class 85, Non-Hazardous,” and note the package type used (1241 or 1273) to prevent reclass delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with fixed Class 85—quote LTL rates confidently without density calculations.
- Cleaner deliveries and fewer claims thanks to partitioned boxes and protected shaft/gear surfaces.
- Kitting components into one shipment reduces handling touches, accessorials, and receiving time.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat fees or special handling surcharges.
