How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Write the BOL clearly: “Speed indicators (speedometers)/odometer heads, boxed, NMFC 177220, Class 100; packaged per Item 1241 or 1273.”
- Protect precision parts: use dense foam or foam-in-place, double-box fragile analog heads, place electronic clusters in anti-static bags, and cap cable/port openings.
- Palletize thoughtfully: keep cartons upright with no overhang, strap or stretch wrap tightly, add corner boards, and use ‘Do Not Stack’ cones for delicate needles.
- For repairs and returns, include serial numbers and declared value; note ‘calibrated instrument’ on paperwork to encourage careful handling and accurate claims support.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 rating enables predictable LTL quotes and easier rate shopping across carriers.
- Packaging to NMFC 1241/1273 helps prevent transit damage, cutting claim costs and downtime for dealerships, fleets, and instrument repair shops.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and streamlines tendering for routine and expedited moves.
- Clear, standardized descriptions reduce reclass/rebill risk, improving invoice accuracy and budget control.
