How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Pack only in sturdy boxes to meet the item rule. Use liners or sealed poly bags for soap or disinfectant-impregnated sponges to prevent residue and moisture transfer.
  2. Calculate density to select the class: pcf = weight (lb) ÷ cubic feet. Example: 20 lb in a 3.0 cu ft carton = 6.7 pcf; apply the appropriate density break under Item 170.
  3. Separate finished loofahs from sponge clippings/waste and label clearly. Put “NMFC 177320 – Sponges, NOI, Boxed” with piece count and total weight on the BOL.
  4. Palletize square to avoid overhang and crushing. Compress or vacuum-pack sponges to raise density when possible, but avoid deforming retail loofahs that must keep their shape.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Optimize freight spend with 13 density tiers: smart compression and right-size cartons can push shipments into lower-cost classes within the 50–400 range.
  • Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and specialized paperwork, streamlining LTL tendering and terminal handling.
  • Accurate NMFC 177320 labeling and boxed packaging reduce reclass/reweigh disputes and unexpected carrier adjustments.
  • Stackable, protected cartons cut damage rates and speed cross-dock transfers, improving on-time performance and lowering claim exposure.
