How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Print NMFC 177390 and Class 70 on the BOL as “Spool heads or ends, iron/steel” to avoid reclass; confirm the shipment contains only the heads/ends, not complete spools.
- Use sturdy boxes with interior separators to protect sharp metal edges; add VCI paper or oil wrap to limit rust. Example: 8-inch steel ends—pack 25 per double-wall carton with corrugated layers and band to a 48x40 pallet.
- Keep individual cartons within safe lift limits (ideally under 65–75 lb) or consolidate into a pallet box; fill voids with dunnage so pieces don’t shift and dent.
- Label cartons “Metal Parts—Edges Protected,” show piece count per box, and photo-document the packout to support claims and speed carrier inspections.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 rating means no density calculations, producing consistent LTL quotes and minimizing surprise reclass fees.
- Acceptance of bagged, boxed, or drummed packing gives fabrication shops flexibility to use existing containers without jeopardizing the classification.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges, improving capacity and overall linehaul rates.
- Damage reduction from proper boxing and edge protection preserves finish quality, prevents rework, and keeps downstream assembly schedules on time.
