How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the Note under item 177401 to ensure your spools fit the NOI definition, then measure each sealed box’s outside dimensions and weigh the gross package to calculate PCF.
- Pack spools so flanges cannot shift: use corner blocks or die-cut inserts, and select cartons with appropriate ECT (e.g., 44–51 ECT for heavier loads) to meet Item 170.
- Consolidate multiple small spools into a tight master carton when possible to raise density and lower class; for example, 24×16×16 in at 65 lb = ~18.3 PCF.
- Place boxed spools on a pallet with no overhang, label all sides, and use top-load sheets to keep stacks stable and protect delicate cores.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Precision density rating (Class 50–400) lets you shape packaging to lower freight class and reduce LTL spend without compromising protection.
- Correct boxing per Item 170 prevents reclass charges and inspection delays, keeping quotes accurate and transit times predictable.
- Damage control for flange and core edges reduces claims and reshipments, improving customer satisfaction and total landed cost.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines carrier selection and avoids hazmat fees, simplifying routing for multi-stop LTL networks.
