How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Ship equipment empty and dry: drain tanks, purge lines, cap nozzles, and lock triggers. Bag the unit, pad the wand/hose, and use a double‑wall carton labeled Equipment—No Liquid.
  2. For units with motors, disconnect power or remove batteries; pack battery separately if applicable. Cushion the motor housing with corner pads and block to prevent shaft or nozzle movement.
  3. Calculate density for each package to set class: weight (lb) ÷ cubic feet. Example: 14 lb in a 16×12×12 in carton = 1.33 cu ft, 10.5 pcf. Record on the BOL for accuracy.
  4. Follow Item 170 for density and Notes 177674/177684 for product and package specifics. Bundle accessories, secure wands to the frame, and mark This Side Up for tanked designs.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Density-driven classes (50–400) let you right-size packaging to boost pcf and lower freight class, trimming LTL costs without compromising protection.
  • Non-hazardous equipment status broadens carrier selection and avoids hazmat surcharges, improving routing flexibility and transit times.
  • Compliant packaging of protruding parts (wands, triggers, nozzles) reduces concealed damage and claims, protecting margin and customer satisfaction.
  • Accurate weights and pcf on the BOL reduce inspection-triggered reclass fees, delivering predictable freight rates and fewer invoice disputes.
