How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Mark your BOL with NMFC 177980 and Class 55, and note “Do Not Cut Bands” to prevent uncoiling during handling.
- Bundle coils with steel or heavy poly banding and edge protectors, then secure to a 48x40 pallet with blocking to stop roll and shift.
- Keep springs flat and centered on the pallet; avoid stacking loosely. Use dunnage to lock round profiles from moving in transit.
- Provide actual weight and pallet dimensions for rating and capacity planning, even though the class is not density-based.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 55 eliminates density debates and cuts reclass fees for steel springs.
- Non-hazardous status expands carrier options and minimizes hazmat-related surcharges.
- Dense, durable product at a low class can drive better LTL rates per pound.
- Single, simple NMFC mapping speeds quoting and reduces claim risk from misclassification.
