How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Mark your BOL with NMFC 177980 and Class 55, and note “Do Not Cut Bands” to prevent uncoiling during handling.
  2. Bundle coils with steel or heavy poly banding and edge protectors, then secure to a 48x40 pallet with blocking to stop roll and shift.
  3. Keep springs flat and centered on the pallet; avoid stacking loosely. Use dunnage to lock round profiles from moving in transit.
  4. Provide actual weight and pallet dimensions for rating and capacity planning, even though the class is not density-based.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 55 eliminates density debates and cuts reclass fees for steel springs.
  • Non-hazardous status expands carrier options and minimizes hazmat-related surcharges.
  • Dense, durable product at a low class can drive better LTL rates per pound.
  • Single, simple NMFC mapping speeds quoting and reduces claim risk from misclassification.
