How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Match each SKU to the correct sub-item within the Automobile Parts Group and review Note, item 17802. Distinguish body panels, electrical modules, glass, and driveline pieces before booking.
- Package by geometry and fragility: sensors/ECUs in foam-lined cartons, heavy cast iron parts strapped to a pallet, fenders with corner protection, and wheels bagged and banded.
- Prep used components: drain and cap fluids, clean residues, and wrap sharp edges. Exclude airbags or inflators; those require separate hazmat handling.
- Provide exact handling-unit dimensions and weight, list make/model/year for traceability, and mark BOL with “NMFC 17800 – Automobile Parts Group” for fast dock routing.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fewer reclasses and disputes by aligning mixed auto parts under the proper group with clear notes and packaging.
- Lower damage rates through tailored packing methods for castings, electronics, and body panels, reducing claims and cycle time.
- Better LTL economics by consolidating diverse SKUs on a single pallet while maintaining item-level identification.
- Quicker receiving and quoting when carriers see clean paperwork with NMFC 17800 and accurate weights and dimensions.
