How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Determine density for each boxed or packaged item—include bases, mounting hardware, and any detachable parts when calculating cubic feet.
  2. For stanchions, retract belts or coil ropes, cap post ends, and double-box heavy bases to prevent metal-on-metal damage and carton punctures.
  3. Microphone stands/arms: lock pivots, bag clamps and screws, and add corner protection so slender arms don’t pierce the box during LTL handling.
  4. Drum/barrel tilting cradles and casket biers: immobilize tilt mechanisms, use blocking inside cartons, or strap boxed units to a skid for stability.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • One NMFC for many stand types (stanchions, mic arms, sidewalk signs, drum cradles) streamlines quoting and reduces item misclassification risk.
  • Density-based classes (50–400) reward smart packaging—nest components, choose right carton size, and boost density to lower your freight bill.
  • Boxed/package-ready format aligns with carrier preferences, cutting rewrap fees and improving claim outcomes on metal and mixed-material fixtures.
  • Non-hazardous status speeds carrier acceptance and helps secure better LTL rates for retail, events, hospitality, and warehouse operations.
