How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List on the BOL as “TV stands/tables, iron or steel, rod/tubular, KD, bases nested, boxed — Class 85” to prevent reclass charges.
- Keep bases nested inside each carton and fill voids with corner protectors and foam to avoid tube denting or finish scuffs.
- Unitize multiple cartons on a pallet with edge boards and two-way banding; mark “This Side Up” to maintain nested orientation.
- Provide carton count and weights per box; carriers expect boxed K/D hardware separated from tops and legs to contain metal contact.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable Class 85 rating reduces surprise reclass fees and stabilizes LTL quotes.
- Taken-apart, bases-nested packing cuts cube, lowering billed weight and freight spend.
- Boxed metal components move safely through conveyor hubs, reducing damage claims and downtime.
- Clear NMFC alignment speeds tendering and pickup scheduling, improving dock throughput.
