How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Palletize heavy stands on 4-way entry skids; block under legs and bolt through base plates so cast iron feet don’t bear point loads. Add V-boards and edge guards on tabletops.
- Wrap machined surfaces with corrosion inhibitor paper, then stretch wrap and band with two steel or heavy poly straps each direction. Cap the table surface with plywood to prevent chipping.
- Keep center of gravity low. Avoid top-heavy crates by removing drawers, vises, or accessories and strapping them separately; mark lift points and use no overhang on a 48x40 pallet.
- List the item as “cast iron tool stand/work table” and reference NMFC 178716. Select the correct class within 70–85 per item condition and packaging, and include photos for carrier inspections.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Optimizes LTL spend: qualifying at the lower end of Class 70–85 can reduce rates versus higher classes for bulky shop equipment.
- Damage reduction for brittle castings: proper blocking, capping, and banding cut chip risk, lowering claims and replacement downtime.
- Faster quoting and fewer reclasses: clear description and consistent packaging keep charges predictable and prevent carrier upcharges.
- Improved dock efficiency: standardized pallets with marked lift points speed handling and avoid accessorials for special equipment.
