Classification Details

NMFC Description Class
178716.00 Stands, tool, or Stands, tool and Work Tables combined, cast iron or cast and plate combined:
178716.01 SU 85
178716.02 KD 70

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Palletize heavy stands on 4-way entry skids; block under legs and bolt through base plates so cast iron feet don’t bear point loads. Add V-boards and edge guards on tabletops.
  2. Wrap machined surfaces with corrosion inhibitor paper, then stretch wrap and band with two steel or heavy poly straps each direction. Cap the table surface with plywood to prevent chipping.
  3. Keep center of gravity low. Avoid top-heavy crates by removing drawers, vises, or accessories and strapping them separately; mark lift points and use no overhang on a 48x40 pallet.
  4. List the item as “cast iron tool stand/work table” and reference NMFC 178716. Select the correct class within 70–85 per item condition and packaging, and include photos for carrier inspections.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Optimizes LTL spend: qualifying at the lower end of Class 70–85 can reduce rates versus higher classes for bulky shop equipment.
  • Damage reduction for brittle castings: proper blocking, capping, and banding cut chip risk, lowering claims and replacement downtime.
  • Faster quoting and fewer reclasses: clear description and consistent packaging keep charges predictable and prevent carrier upcharges.
  • Improved dock efficiency: standardized pallets with marked lift points speed handling and avoid accessorials for special equipment.
