How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Palletize single axles with wood blocking and V‑blocks, then band securely with edge protectors; cap spindles and threads to prevent impact damage.
- For multiple axles, use an A‑frame or steel rack; support the center tube, prevent rolling with chocks, and label piece count plus the longest length.
- If shipping bare steel, apply light oil or VCI wrap and cover machined ends; bag loose hardware like U‑bolts to keep the set together.
- Record exact length, diameter at the hubs, and any protrusions; note forklift clearance points so terminals can handle the axle safely during LTL transfers.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Reduced damage claims by protecting machined spindles and bearing surfaces, keeping replacement and downtime costs down.
- Fewer accessorial fees by planning for overlength risks and choosing pallet or rack packaging that fits LTL handling rules.
- Faster quotes and smoother tendering since carriers can see clear dimensions, packaging type, and non‑hazmat status at a glance.
- Better dock efficiency with forklift‑friendly units, shortening dwell time and helping your axles move through hubs without delays.
