How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Document as NMFC 179260, Class 65, and specify packaging (bags, boxes, or drums) on the BOL for clean rating and faster quotes.
- Palletize bags or boxes tightly with corner boards and stretch wrap; add a slip sheet to prevent powder leaks and keep edges from tearing.
- Use moisture barriers for bagged product and keep loads out of high heat to limit clumping or softening; drums should be banded and chocked.
- For food, cosmetic, or pharma-grade material, protect from cross-contamination by shipping in clean, dry vans and using sealed liners inside boxes.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 65 means predictable LTL pricing without density calculations, simplifying bids and audits.
- Non-hazardous status removes hazmat surcharges and paperwork, cutting accessorial risk and transit delays.
- Multiple accepted packages—bags, boxes, or drums—reduce repacking costs and align with supplier formats.
- Clear classification lowers reclass/inspection fees and claim exposure, protecting margin on high-volume consumables.
