Notes

Note 179318: NOTE-Density must be shown by the shipper on the bill of lading and shipping order at time of shipment. If density is not shown and shipment is inadvertently accepted, charges will initially be assessed under the provisions of item 179310, naming 'Steps or Stairs, modular or mobile home, NOI.' Upon satisfactory proof of actual density, freight charges will be adjusted accordingly.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Verify density at 20+ pcf by weighing each box and recording external box dimensions, then confirm the total shipment qualifies for Class 70.
  2. Pack disassembled steps and metal railings in sturdy boxes with foam edge guards and void fill; use double-wall cartons to resist steel punctures.
  3. If railings ship in separate packages, label as 1 of 2, 2 of 2 and tie all pieces to the same PRO/BOL to prevent split delivery.
  4. Palletize boxed components, strap tightly, and apply Heavy and Do Not Top Load labels to avoid damage to steel treads and brackets.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Class 70 at 20+ pcf delivers competitive LTL rates versus lighter, higher-class alternatives.
  • Boxed, fully disassembled steel parts reduce reclass and damage risk, lowering chargebacks and claims.
  • One NMFC for steps and optional railings simplifies the BOL and speeds carrier acceptance across non-haz networks.
  • Clear density documentation enables fast quoting and fewer inspections, improving on-time pickups for modular/mobile home projects.
