How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Determine density for each box: measure exterior L x W x H (inches), convert to cubic feet (divide by 1728), then weight ÷ cubic feet. Example: 24x18x8 in = 2.0 cu ft; 22 lb ÷ 2.0 = 11 pcf.
- Use rigid corrugated cartons (preferably double-wall) with snug void fill to prevent crushing of woven straw items. Add poly liners or bagging to keep moisture out.
- Palletize with no overhang, use a cap sheet, and secure with stretch wrap and straps. Mark fragile/top-load carefully if baskets or hats deform under weight.
- On the BOL, list “NMFC 179620 Straw Goods, NOI, Item 170” and include the measured density (pcf). Note non-hazardous and box count to avoid reclass fees.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Density-accurate entries trend toward the lowest applicable class, reducing LTL spend for compact, well-packed cartons.
- Moisture and crush protection cut claim risk on delicate woven straw, keeping margins intact during seasonal surges.
- Clear NMFC and density on paperwork prevents reclassifications, rebills, and delays—fewer back-office disputes and faster cash flow.
- Consistent box sizing improves stackability and trailer utilization, helping carriers price competitively and improving your service options.
