How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Select packaging that contains fines: 40–50 lb paper/poly bags on pallets, compressed bales, or FIBC super sacks. Add slip sheets or liners to prevent leakage.
- Keep hulls dry from dock to delivery. Request a dry van, use pallet top sheets, and consider breathable liners in totes to reduce condensation and mold risk.
- State the item clearly on the BOL: “Sunflower Seed Hulls, non-hazardous.” Confirm with your carrier whether class 65 or 70 applies for your packaging and handling.
- Plan loads for cube, not weight. Stack stable bagged pallets, brace with dunnage or airbags, and cap dusty stacks with stretch wrap to limit shift and clean-up.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Correctly using class 65–70 minimizes reclass fees and unexpected rate adjustments, stabilizing LTL quotes for recurring feed, bedding, or biomass lanes.
- Non-hazardous status speeds carrier acceptance and reduces compliance overhead—no hazmat paperwork, simpler tendering, and broader network options.
- Optimized packaging (baled or super sacks) boosts trailer utilization, raising payload per move and lowering cost per ton for bulk agricultural byproducts.
- Clean, contained pallets curb sweep-out charges and claims from spillage or moisture, protecting customer specs for feed mills, pet bedding, or biofuel producers.
