How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List packaging as bags or drums on the BOL and include NMFC 180000 with Class 50 to avoid reclass and billing corrections.
- Palletize bagged product with moisture protection: use poly-lined stretch wrap and a top sheet; example load is 40 x 50 lb bags on a 48x40 pallet, max 2,000 lb.
- For drums, secure lids and band drums to pallets; add chocks or blocking to prevent rolling and ensure forklift tine clearance for safe handling.
- Keep shipments dry and segregated from food items; request clean, dry vans and avoid floor loading to limit caking and phosphate dust transfer.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 50 rating delivers lower LTL rates for dense fertilizer, cutting per-pallet shipping costs on recurring lanes.
- Straightforward, density-free classification reduces inspections and reclass fees, accelerating quote-to-invoice cycles.
- Non-hazardous status eliminates hazmat surcharges and broadens carrier selection for more competitive bids.
- Bags or drums streamline handling and reduce damage risk, minimizing claims and keeping agricultural supply chains on schedule.
