Note 180019: NOTE-Applies only on interior packing forms designed to support or suspend rolls of plastic film or sheeting within a shipping container.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- State the full NMFC on the BOL: “Supports, roll, fiberboard or wood particleboard, in packages – NMFC 180018, Class 55,” and indicate “with/without expanded plastic pad and plastic film” as applicable.
- Package as tight cartons or strapped bundles; nest pairs to prevent scissoring. If palletizing bundles, band across the width and add a slip sheet to stop abrasion.
- Guard against moisture and crushing for non‑corrugated fiberboard: use shrink wrap or a poly liner, edge protectors, and keep units off the floor with skids or dunnage.
- Label piece count and orientation (“Do Not Overstack,” “Keep Dry”). Avoid mixing corrugated parts in the same line item to prevent reclassification.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with fixed Class 55—no density math or reweigh surprises.
- Single item covers versions with plastic pad and film, reducing NMFC disputes and audit chargebacks.
- Efficient bundles count as packages, improving cube use and lowering cost per support in LTL.
- Nonhazardous materials streamline carrier acceptance and cut compliance overhead.
