How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm you’re shipping steel-and-rubber seating posture supports with fabric or plastic covers, packed in boxes, to match NMFC 180020 at Class 100.
- Pad steel edges and protect rubber components: polybag the cover, add foam or corrugated pads, and fill voids so parts can’t punch through cartons.
- Palletize boxed units flat; use corner boards and a top sheet, then strap or wrap. Keep stacks around 40–48 inches to avoid crushing fabric covers.
- Print NMFC 180020, Class 100, and “Boxes” on the BOL with an accurate piece count to ensure correct carrier rating and fewer reclass disputes.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 means no density calculation, enabling faster rating, simpler audits, and predictable LTL quotes.
- Box-only packaging aligns with standard LTL handling, reducing claims on covered components and limiting accessorial exposure.
- Material-specific description (steel, rubber, covered) narrows interpretation, helping prevent reclass fees and chargebacks.
- Straightforward mapping in TMS and with 3PLs supports consistent pricing across office, automotive, and ergonomic seating supply chains.
