How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Mark the BOL with NMFC 18060 and describe as “Bodies, freight or passenger, other than plastic” plus the packaging type (boxed or crated).
- Build a rigid crate with internal bracing at door openings, roof rails, and mounting points; pad sharp edges and remove loose hardware, bagging bolts and fasteners inside.
- Use skids rated for the shell’s weight, provide forklift clearances, and label lift points and center of gravity to prevent panel flex or racking during handling.
- Review Note, item 18061 for any exceptions and confirm with your carrier; share photos and overall dimensions for pre-approval and smoother pickup.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate use of NMFC 18060 protects your LTL pricing and limits reclass or inspection fees on large body shells.
- Crated or boxed packaging cuts damage risk on thin panels and glazing, reducing claim costs and production delays.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options, improving transit selection and competitive rate availability.
- Standardized item streamlines quoting and routing for OEMs, upfitters, and bus builders, shortening time from order to delivery.
