How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Note NMFC 17960 and “bogie/walking beams, with or without saddles” on the BOL to match the fixed Class 70 rating.
  2. Build a stout skid the full beam length; add 2x4 cross-ties every 3–4 ft and steel-band the bundle to prevent shifting or rolling.
  3. Keep saddles inside the bundle footprint; use corner protectors and end blocks so metal edges don’t cut strapping or puncture adjacent freight.
  4. Provide exact length, width, height, and weight for quotes; Class stays 70, but carriers may apply long-freight surcharges on pieces over 8–12 ft.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable Class 70 eliminates density disputes and reduces costly reclass fees.
  • Skid or bundle packaging speeds cross-dock handling, lowering damage risk and claim exposure on heavy suspension beams.
  • Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and simplifies paperwork and carrier selection.
  • Combining multiple beams in one bundle cuts handling units, which can reduce minimum charges and improve transit efficiency.
