How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Book these inline air/oil separators as NMFC 180840 at Class 85; density does not change the rating, so quote without a density calculation.
- Prepare units by draining oils, venting trapped air, and capping all nozzles or threaded ports. Add protective plugs and cover gauges to prevent impact damage.
- Package on a skid or in a crate with blocking and tie-downs. Use edge guards on flanges and band to the pallet; for a 36-inch inline unit, add cradle saddles to stop rolling.
- Mark orientation, center of gravity, and “Non-Hazmat.” Include a spec sheet noting material (steel, aluminum, or composite) and pressure rating for carrier handling notes.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs: fixed Class 85 minimizes reclasses and surprise rebills, improving quote accuracy for project bids.
- Faster tendering: no density workups mean quicker rate shopping and fewer carrier exceptions during dock audits.
- Lower claims risk: capped ports, cradled skids, and flange protection prevent leaks and flange-face damage common with pipeline tanks.
- Broader carrier options: non-hazardous status lets you use standard LTL networks and secure more competitive freight rates.
