Note 180862: NOTE-Tanks made of material not less than 3/16 -inch thick may be shipped loose, and must be loaded and braced by consignor.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Select NMFC 180860 for aluminum tanks and aluminum fuel tanks listed NOI, shipped SU in boxes or crates; no density calculation is needed for Class 250.
- Prepare used fuel tanks by fully draining, ventilating, and capping all ports; mark cartons or crates "Empty and Purged" to maintain non-hazardous status.
- For boxed shipments, use double-wall corrugate with rigid foam or custom blocking to protect weld seams and fittings; add corner protection to prevent punctures.
- For crated shipments, use ISPM-15 compliant lumber when exporting, add cross-bracing to prevent panel flex, and provide fork-entry skids for safe handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 250 rating delivers predictable pricing and reduces reclass exposure on aluminum tanks versus density-based alternatives.
- Proper boxing or crating lowers damage risk on thin-gauge aluminum, cutting claims and downstream replacement costs.
- Clearly documented "empty/purged" status avoids hazmat-related delays or surcharges, accelerating carrier acceptance and transit.
- Lightweight aluminum construction often improves handling efficiency, which can help minimize accessorials tied to difficult loading.
