How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Note “Aluminum Tanks, NOI, KD — Class 85” on the BOL and list piece counts for shells, heads, and fittings to avoid reclass or inspection delays.
- Palletize knocked-down components with edge protectors, banding, and stretch wrap; cap or tape over ports and flanges to prevent abrasion and fork damage.
- Keep curved shells from rolling by cribbing with dunnage blocks and using chocks; mark Do Not Stack if arc or curvature makes stacking unstable.
- Because the class is fixed at 85, still measure total pallet dimensions and weight for accurate LTL quotes and to optimize lane selection.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: a single Class 85 removes density-based surprises and reduces the risk of costly reclass fees.
- Lower cube and weight: aluminum construction and KD packing help pack more units per skid, trimming per-unit freight spend.
- Faster routing: non-hazardous, standard NMFC handling streamlines cross-dock transfers and reduces accessorial complications.
- Fewer claims: clear KD labeling and protective packaging for shells and fittings minimize scuffs, bent flanges, and loss.
