How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Ship units empty, clean, and dry. Cap ports and protect valves with guards; roll bladders loosely and pad fittings before boxing or crating.
- Use a pallet or platform to elevate packages and prevent abrasion. Strap with edge protectors and add rope, stakes, or staves if supplied in the kit.
- Mark the BOL: “NMFC 180920 Bulk Storage, rubber or plastic-coated fabric, in packages – Class 85, non-hazardous.” Fixed class means no density needed for rating.
- Keep forklifts clear of fittings and folded edges; avoid top-stacking heavy freight. Add moisture barrier wrap for outdoor or jobsite deliveries.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs: Fixed Class 85 minimizes reclass disputes and surprise billing, speeding up LTL quoting and tendering.
- Streamlined cataloging: One code covers rubber or plastic-coated constructions and accessory kits (rope, stakes, staves), simplifying SKU and BOL management.
- Lower risk and fewer claims: Proper packaging guidance reduces punctures and edge crush, protecting high-value bladders used for water, fuels substitutes, or dewatering.
- Wider carrier access: Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and simplifies routing for construction, municipal, and agricultural shipments.
