How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 181190 and Class 100 on the BOL; describe as “empty gasoline pressure tank with attached gauge” to prevent hazmat misrouting.
- Use approved boxes or crates. Cushion the gauge with foam blocking, cap gauge ports, and immobilize the tank; e.g., double-wall carton with molded inserts for a 5-gallon unit.
- Confirm tanks are empty, vented, and vapor-purged before shipment; include a cleaning or decon note when returning field-used equipment to avoid carrier delays.
- Unitize multiple cartons on a 4-way pallet with corner boards and stretch wrap; keep gauge faces off the deck and mark “Do Not Stack” for light, top-heavy crates.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs: fixed Class 100 removes density calculations, simplifying quotes across carriers.
- Fewer damage claims: boxed/crated packaging shields delicate pressure gauges and fittings.
- No hazmat fees: item is non-hazardous when empty, widening carrier options and reducing surcharges.
- Operational speed: clear labeling and proper blocking speed cross-dock handling for jobsite or dealer deliveries.
