How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use rigid double-wall cartons with foam or molded inserts to isolate glass edges and corners; mark Fragile and This Side Up on all panels.
- Palletize cartons with no overhang, add corner boards and a top cap, then stretch-wrap and use two light tension straps to avoid crushing pressure.
- Declare Class 100 on the BOL; density math isn’t required, but include carton count and total weight, plus dimensions when carriers apply cubic rules.
- Plan accessorials early: request liftgate or limited access if needed, and avoid double-stacking unless packaging is certified for stacked compression.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with a fixed Class 100 eliminates density disputes and costly reclasses.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and reduces administrative friction at tender.
- Box-ready packaging shortens dock time and lowers damage claims for sight glass, gauge glass, or small glazed components.
- Clear, single classification speeds quoting and improves rate shopping across LTL carriers.
