NMFC Description Class
18130.00 Bodies, freight or passenger, plastic, NOI, with or without fenders, tops or other parts, in crates:

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Note NMFC 18130 on the BOL and describe contents clearly: “Plastic vehicle body in crate; may include fenders/tops/other parts.”
  2. Build a rigid crate with internal bracing to stop panel flex. Use foam sheets and edge protectors so glossy plastic skins don’t scuff.
  3. Provide 4-way forklift entry and mark lift points. Add “Do Not Stack” and “This Side Up” to prevent roof or quarter-panel deformation.
  4. Record exterior dimensions and weight of the sealed crate, not the bare body. Photograph packing and include a parts manifest inside.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Non-hazardous classification streamlines carrier acceptance and avoids hazmat surcharges.
  • Clear NMFC identification and precise crate descriptions reduce reclass fees and inspection delays.
  • Purpose-built crating cuts damage risk on high-cube, lightweight shells, lowering claims and downtime for upfitters or coach builders.
  • Accurate dims help optimize LTL capacity decisions versus dedicated flatbed, improving freight rates on long lanes.
