How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Ship tanks empty and vented: drain oil, cap all ports, and secure or remove pumps and gauge-sticks. Pad protrusions with foam and absorbent wrap to prevent leaks or scuffs.
- Crate or box the wheeled tank so it cannot roll. Block wheels, strap the frame, and brace handles; use 275# test fiberboard lining or edge protectors where metal could chafe.
- Record a precise shipping weight including tank, wheels, pump assembly, and the crate/box. Mark BOL with NMFC 181540, Class 100, and keep orientation arrows upright.
- For jobsite and fleet maintenance carts, request liftgate or inside delivery only if crated for forklift handling to avoid accessorials and equipment damage.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 100 rating removes density calculations, speeding quotes and preventing re-bills.
- Single-item coverage: pumps and gauge-sticks attached ship under the same item, simplifying BOLs and reducing misclassification risk.
- Damage and claim reduction: rigid crating and wheel blocking protect pump shafts and valves, cutting downtime for field service crews.
- Compliance made easy: ships as non-hazardous when empty and clean, avoiding hazmat fees and paperwork delays.
