How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Empty, drain, and purge the treater; cap every nozzle and valve, tag “clean and dry,” and remove gauges to a padded box.
- Mount the steel vessel on a timber skid or steel base with cribbing at saddles; use spreader bars on the lifting lugs to prevent shell distortion.
- If controls are installed, wrap and crate the automation panel separately; route sensor leads to junction boxes and label connections for reassembly.
- Quote as NMFC 181560, Class 85; provide overall dims including nozzles and skid footprint, and choose LTL for compact units or flatbed for oversize.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with fixed Class 85, independent of density or packaging variation.
- Lower compliance cost: non-hazardous status means no hazmat fees or special documentation.
- Faster tendering and fewer disputes since a simple NMFC code reduces reclass and reweigh risk.
- Reduced damage exposure by aligning packaging to Tanks handling best practices (skids, crating, spreader bars).
