How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Put NMFC 181780 and Class 85 on the BOL; this item is not density-based, so no PCF calculation is required.
- Pack the canvas tank folded or rolled, and bundle any platforms, rope, stakes, or staves inside the same package; cap sharp hardware to prevent punctures.
- Choose sturdy cartons or wooden crates for field kits; if palletized, strap and wrap so bundles can’t migrate and keep labels facing out for quick scanning.
- Protect against moisture and abrasion—poly bag liners, edge guards, and top sheets help, and request “Do Not Stack” if the canvas bladder could crease.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Flat Class 85 rating delivers predictable LTL quotes and avoids reclass fees tied to density.
- Bundling accessories with the tank in one package reduces handling charges and short‑shipment risk at deployment sites.
- Non-hazardous status expands carrier options and simplifies routing, often improving transit times.
- Better protection for flexible liners lowers damage claims and keeps construction and relief schedules on track.
