How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 181840 on the BOL and describe as “pipe insulation tape, rolls in inner cartons in boxes” to match the tariff wording and prevent reclass.
- Palletize boxed rolls flat, avoid over-compression of layers, and use corner boards/top caps so the cork-asphalt tape doesn’t deform during transit.
- Protect from extreme temps: the asphalt/petroleum binder can soften in heat and stiffen in cold. Choose service that avoids hot trailers or freezing exposure.
- Stretch-wrap to keep cartons dry and intact, label all sides, and keep pallet footprints tight to reduce cubic charges for LTL.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 rating makes quotes predictable and reduces the risk of carrier reclassification fees.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat paperwork and surcharges, improving total landed cost.
- Boxed-roll packaging lowers damage risk, cutting claim rates and replacement costs for HVAC and pipe insulation jobs.
- Clear NMFC alignment speeds tendering and pickup scheduling, shortening lead times for maintenance and construction projects.
