How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Determine density for Item 170: measure each box or crate (L x W x H in inches), convert to cubic feet, then divide total weight by cubic feet. Example: 280 lb in 12.0 cu ft = 23.3 pcf; select class from Item 170.
- Match packaging to target type: paper/cardboard targets in sturdy boxes with corner protection; steel or composite gongs and silhouettes in wood crates with foam, dividers, and edge guards to prevent abrasion.
- Document clearly on the BOL: "Targets, NOI – NMFC 181920, see Note 181921, subject to Item 170" and list counts of plates, stands, or sets to avoid misclassification as equipment.
- For heavy military targets, center mass in the crate, block and brace to the base, cap protruding hardware, and use screw-fastened lids so LTL handlers can keep piece weights manageable.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate density mapping under Item 170 prevents reclass fees and inspection delays for mixed-material target shipments.
- Optimized pack-out raises density (tighter nesting, separators rather than void space) to achieve a lower class and reduce LTL cost.
- Crating steel targets greatly cuts edge damage and paint scuff claims, stabilizing budgets and avoiding reship/rework on training timelines.
- Clear NOI labeling and reference to Note 181921 streamlines carrier acceptance, improving pickup reliability for base and range deliveries.
