How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Specify NMFC 182615 and Class 55 on your BOL, and note packaging as crates. Include piece count, exterior crate dimensions, and total weight for accurate LTL quotes.
  2. Build sturdy crates: 3/8–1/2 in plywood with internal foam or rubber pads, edge guards, and separators between tile stacks. Block and brace to prevent rattle and shear.
  3. Use a skid-style base with 4-way forklift access. Keep the center of gravity low, band the crate to the base, and mark Do Not Stack if the crate isn’t stack-rated.
  4. Label clearly: Fragile—Stone, This Side Up, and Team Lift where applicable. For jobsite deliveries, request liftgate and appointment service to avoid redeliveries.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Class 55 rating helps secure competitive LTL rates for dense, durable stone products, lowering per-shipment cost versus higher classes.
  • Simple, non-density classification reduces reclass fees and billing disputes, improving invoice accuracy and cash flow predictability.
  • Crated packaging lowers breakage risk and claim exposure, protecting margins on high-value tile or molding and keeping projects on schedule.
  • Clear NMFC guidance streamlines quoting and procurement for contractors, distributors, and fabricators, speeding bid responses and delivery planning.
