How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Ship only in packages: cartonize tiles or bundle moldings, then stretch-wrap and palletize; do not tender loose pieces.
- Guard edges and faces: use corner boards, foam sheets, and double-wall cartons for tiles; cap molding ends and strap bundles tight with slip sheets.
- Control conditions: keep dry for cork and felt-base materials and avoid heat that could warp linoleum; mark Do Not Top Load if cartons are fragile.
- Document clearly: list NMFC 182635, Class 70 on the BOL, note package type and piece count to curb inspections and reclass fees.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with a fixed Class 70—no density calculations or surprise reclasses.
- Faster quoting and booking since the item is non-haz and simply rated when packaged.
- Lower claims risk by following packaging requirements that protect brittle edges and finished surfaces.
- Reliable delivery for flooring and trim projects, reducing jobsite delays and avoided rework costs.
