How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use NMFC 182710 on the BOL with a clear line item: Facing tile or molding, imitation brick/stone, boxed, Class 55, non-hazardous.
- Confirm the product is not hollow-molded; those pieces fall under a different item per the note (see 182711) to avoid reclass fees.
- Package individual pieces in double‑wall cartons with interleaving sheets and edge protectors; keep a tight fit to prevent chipping during transit.
- For LTL, palletize boxed sets upright with no overhang, add a top sheet, stretch-wrap, and band; the classification remains Class 55 even when palletized.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 55 simplifies rating and reduces surprise reclassifications compared to density-based tiles.
- Non-hazardous designation streamlines paperwork and minimizes compliance-related accessorials.
- Clear separation from hollow-molded items cuts dispute risk and accelerates claims resolution.
- Optimized box packaging lowers breakage, protecting margin on decorative facing materials for retail and jobsite deliveries.
