How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Show NMFC 183020 and Class 70 on the BOL, and describe the commodity as “Tire Cord or Twine, in boxes” to match the tariff wording.
- Use rigid corrugated boxes sized to the spools or hanks; fill voids with kraft or foam, seal with reinforced tape, and strap if cartons are heavy.
- Palletize on 48x40 pallets with no overhang; add corner boards and stretch wrap. Use a top sheet if top-stacking is expected or boxes are light.
- Protect from moisture and abrasion—poly-bag inner packs when needed and avoid metal bands contacting box edges. Mark piece counts and apply orientation labels as required.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable LTL pricing with fixed Class 70—no density calculations or reweigh-driven reclassifications.
- Fewer inspection delays and chargebacks when cartons and documentation clearly match NMFC 183020 requirements.
- Better cube utilization from stackable boxes, improving pallet efficiency and lowering per-piece transportation costs.
- Broad carrier acceptance since the freight is non-hazardous, simplifying tendering and reducing administrative overhead.
