Notes

Note 182941: NOTE-Applies on scraps or pieces of metallic tin having value for remelting purposes only, also on clippings, drippings, shavings, turnings, or old wornout block tin pipe having value for remelting purposes only.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm the tin form and packaging: anodes; blocks/bars/pigs/slabs/ingots; sheets (not tin plate); powdered/pulverized; slimes/electrolytic mud; or scrap per note to item 182941 in boxes, packages, drums, pails, or machine-pressed bundles.
  2. Determine density to select the freight class: measure the total cube (including pallet or crate), divide weight by cubic feet to get pcf, then match to class 50–400. Example: 900 lb on 6.0 cu ft = 150 pcf, typically a lower class.
  3. Package by form to meet Item 170: powders and slimes in sealed, lined drums or pails; sheets edge-protected and crated or boxed; blocks/bars banded with dunnage and on forklift-safe pallets; scrap secured in boxes/drums or machine-pressed bundles.
  4. Document precisely on the BOL: state the exact tin form, packaging type, net/gross weight, and cube; note moisture content for slimes/mud; reference the scrap note if applicable to avoid reclass or inspection delays.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Accurate density calculation can unlock lower freight classes for dense tin shipments, directly reducing LTL rates.
  • Packaging aligned with Item 170 limits damages and reclass fees, protecting margins on heavy metal cargo.
  • Clear form identification (anodes vs sheets vs powder) minimizes carrier inspections and speeds dock throughput.
  • Stackable boxes and pressed bundles improve cube utilization and handling efficiency, trimming accessorial costs.
