How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Drain fuel and oil from powered augers and cap vents; for manual T-handle diggers, tape blades closed and protect points before packing.
- Guard the cutting edge or screw bit using plastic tip caps, corrugated sleeves, and zip ties so the bit cannot rotate or puncture packaging.
- Choose packaging by weight: use a double-wall carton with foam blocking for single units; crate or strap two‑man frames upright on a pallet.
- Mark the BOL with “NMFC 183635, see Note 183636,” list the number of bits and handles, and include exact dimensions using the longest bit length.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Correctly using NMFC 183635 reduces reclass and reweigh fees, delivering cleaner LTL quotes within the Tools group.
- Non-hazardous status (when drained) avoids hazmat surcharges and accelerates carrier acceptance and pickup scheduling.
- Proper guarding of sharp bits cuts damage claims, minimizing reships and keeping fencing and decking projects on schedule.
- Bundling multiple bits with a powerhead on one pallet lowers handling units and can improve rate negotiation and transit reliability.
