How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Match the pack to the tool: handle-less heads go in sturdy corrugated boxes with blade guards; handled axes ship in secure packages with full edge protection.
- Use dividers or foam to stop steel heads from shifting. Example: 12 hatchet heads in a double-wall box with cardboard partitions and tip covers.
- Palletize with no overhang, blades facing inward. Add corner boards, band tightly, and wrap 4–5 turns to prevent punctures and carton burst.
- On the BOL, note NMFC 183660, Class 70, non-hazardous. Keep counts by inner carton and total weight to avoid reclass or inspection delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 simplifies quoting and avoids density disputes, reducing surprise reclass fees.
- One NMFC item covers handled and handle-less versions, streamlining SKUs and paperwork across tool lines.
- Proper packaging for sharp edges lowers damage claims and OS&D, protecting margins on heavy steel tools.
- Predictable classification helps negotiate better LTL rates for hardware distributors and seasonal forestry shipments.
