How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Bundle straight tamping bars in tight 4–6 piece packs with edge protectors, then band to a pallet to stop rolling and tip damage.
- Use end caps or wood blocks over steel tips to prevent punctures and scuffs, especially when bars have iron or steel heads.
- Place bundles parallel on skids with chocks or dunnage; avoid loose single bars that can shift during LTL cross-docking.
- Write NMFC 183740 and Class 65 on the BOL, and note piece counts per bundle for easier receiving and claim prevention.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable Class 65 rating streamlines quoting and removes density calculations for solid bars.
- Non-hazardous status cuts paperwork and accelerates tendering with most LTL carriers.
- Proper bundling reduces rehandling fees and lowers damage risk for heavy, cylindrical tools.
- Clear classification for wooden or wood-and-steel bars improves rate consistency across jobsite and utility projects.
