How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Guard every cutting edge. Fit a sheath or heavy chipboard over each bush hook blade, then wrap and tape so the hook cannot pierce the carton.
- If shipping with handles attached, immobilize the head-to-handle joint and pad the handle. For loose handles, bundle in pairs with corrugated pads to prevent scuffing.
- Choose rugged cartons sized to stop movement; double-wall or reinforced corners work well. Fill voids and ensure no metal tip or handle end protrudes.
- Label clearly: “Sharp Edge Protected.” Note count per box (e.g., 3 units per package) to streamline OS&D checks and receiving.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 70 eliminates density calculations and reduces reclass risk for sharp-edged tools.
- Same class with or without handles simplifies SKUs and quotations for distributors serving landscaping, forestry, and municipal crews.
- Non-hazardous status speeds tendering and avoids hazmat fees, keeping accessorial costs in check.
- Durable packaging guidelines cut damage claims on steel blades, protecting margins and carrier relationships.
