How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Palletize each steel safety cage set-up (SU) on a 48x40 or wider skid, band through the base, and avoid inserting forks through the mesh or door openings.
- Latch and secure doors or pins, then add corner protection and stretch wrap to prevent scuffs on powder coat and to keep tags or gauges from shifting.
- Mark the BOL with NMFC 184040, Class 125, and note “SU” so carriers don’t reclass as knocked down equipment; include accurate weight and dimensions for capacity planning.
- Do not stack cages unless OEM design permits; if stacking is unavoidable, use rigid dunnage and block-and-brace to protect footplates, welds, and screens.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 125 rating delivers predictable LTL quotes and cuts reclass risk, helping control accessorial and audit costs.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and special handling fees, improving total landed cost for service centers and tire shops.
- Proper skid prep reduces OS&D claims on high-strength steel frames, minimizing downtime for bay operations and safety compliance programs.
- Placement in the Tools group aligns with shop equipment lanes, supporting multi-item consolidation and sharper contract rate negotiations.
