How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Describe the item precisely on the BOL: “Carriers or storage containers, rooftop, molded plastic—luggage/utility for auto or RV,” and reference NMFC 18436.
- Measure at the widest and tallest points, including lid overhangs and mounting rails. Example: 82 x 34 x 16 in after packaging, 48 lb per piece.
- Protect hinges, latches, and corners with foam blocks or edge guards. Wrap the shell in film or foam, then carton or palletize; avoid compression that can warp the lid.
- If shipping halves, nest shells face-to-face with spacers and strap to a pallet. Apply “Do Not Top Stack” and “Plastic—Fragile” labels to limit crush and scuff damage.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Clear NMFC identification reduces reclass and rebill risks, keeping LTL invoices predictable for rooftop carriers and RV utility boxes.
- Right-sizing cartons or nesting halves lowers cube and dimensional charges, cutting avoidable costs on lightweight, bulky plastic shells.
- Damage prevention through proper bracing and edge protection reduces claim frequency on crack-prone molded plastics and speeds replacements.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and consolidation opportunities, improving transit flexibility and lane coverage.
